The Fox and Fir on White Mountain Boulevard

Pinetop, Arizona  ·  7,000 feet

The Fox & Fir

Fifteen rooms under the ponderosas, on the only road through the White Mountains.

The place

Three hours north of Phoenix the road climbs out of the desert, and somewhere past six thousand feet the air changes. Pines close in on both sides. This is where the pavement levels out.

The Fox and Fir sits on White Mountain Boulevard in the middle of Pinetop, inside the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world. The building dates to 1976 and spent most of its life as the Little Pine Motel. In 2025 it was taken down to the studs and rebuilt in full — new everything, room by room.

Fifteen rooms, each with its own door to the outside. A lodge house with a proper kitchen. Gravel underfoot, tall trees overhead, and the highway close enough to be useful but far enough to forget.

The rooms

Fifteen doors, each opening onto the pines.

Vaulted ceilings and wide plank floors. A kitchenette with a sink, microwave and refrigerator. A tiled walk-in shower. Quiet heat and air in every room, controlled by you and no one else.

No interior corridors, no lobby to cross. You park, you walk a few steps, you're home.

The lodge house

A real kitchen, and a long table to sit around.

The front building is the heart of the property. A commercial range under a steel hood, full-size refrigeration, a fourteen-foot stone island, and enough seating that nobody has to eat standing up.

It was built for groups — families taking the whole place for a weekend, crews working the mountain, retreats, reunions, anyone who would rather cook together than find a table for twelve in a town this size.

The setting

Snow in winter. Everything else the rest of the year.

Sunrise Park Resort runs forty-five minutes east — three peaks, sixty-five runs, and the deepest snow in Arizona. The White Mountain Trail System puts more than a hundred and eighty miles of singletrack and hiking within a short drive.

There are over two hundred lakes and streams in the White Mountains. Rainbow Lake and Woodland Lake are minutes away. Elk and deer seasons bring people up every fall. Hon-Dah Resort & Casino is five minutes down the highway, and the shops and restaurants of Pinetop are across the street.
